Breakfast as architecture
The core (almost always)
- Eggs (fried or scrambled that are still eggs, not yellow foam)
- Bacon that was introduced to a pan
- Sausage with actual meat
- Tomato, mushrooms
- Toast
- Tea or strong coffee
Beans: correct on many plates; not mandatory if the rest is excellent.
Black pudding: correct if you like it; not a personality test.
Hash browns: American cousin, widely loved, not traditional. Fine.
Fried bread: a commitment.
Cafe vs hotel
Cafe: look at the grill. A busy independent with a short menu usually beats a “breakfast until 4pm” laminated novel.
Hotel: buffet heat lamps are where tomatoes go to die. Order cooked-to-order if you can.
Scotland, Ulster, Wales
Variations exist (tattie scone, soda bread, laverbread). They are not “wrong Full Englishes.” They are other breakfasts. See Scotland and the regional guide.
At home
You do not need nine pans. Pick four items and do them hot. Seasonal tomatoes in summer actually taste of something.
